There are many different uses of Life’s Onion. It is designed to get to the core or the heart of a topic. Life’s Onion encourages the user to start on the surface layer of a subject or issue and work their way down the layers to get at deeper meaning and deeper understanding. The tool is based on the popular metaphor of ‘peeling an onion.’

Carl Jung compared understanding the human psyche to peeling an onion. There’s also an old saying about experts, ‘he really knows his onions on that subject.’ Life’s Onion transforms this metaphor into a simple, interactive tool to help explore whatever topic you choose. This open-ended counseling tool and its accompanying support materials are structured enough to focus creativity and problem-solving skills, but flexible enough to apply to any methodology or subject area.

Who uses the Life's Onion Therapeutic Tool

Life’s Onion has 3 layers of 4 peels each and a central core. When applying Life’s Onion to a project, the peels are used to examine the subject and get down to its deeper core or truth. It is a tool for  organizing thoughts and feelings, a method of focusing on one thing at a time,  a way to break a task down into its component parts. The pliable, plastic peels can be removed and replaced – and can be decorated or designed with a Sharpie marker.

When Life’s Onion is complete and the peels are open, the object resembles a flower. It is about transformation, it is an onion but it turns into a flower. Whether exploring a mental health issue, a business plan, an individual goal, or a traumatic experience; Life’s Onion makes the approach both methodical and doable. It is finite, it can be completed.

Life’s Onion can be immediately incorporated into virtually all current therapy, self-help, and personal development programs and protocols. No aspect of Life’s Onion interrupts any existing processes or techniques. In many cases, it acts as a major enhancement to existing therapeutic activities for children and adults by functioning as a physical touchstone in an otherwise conceptual process.

Life’s Onion has proven extremely effective in the treatment of psychological and psychiatric disorders, behavioral health and addiction recovery, grief and depression counseling, and all other areas of mental and behavioral health counseling. It has also shown incredible promise in use with youth counseling, life coaching, business consulting, and personal improvement and self-help programs. The therapeutic tool and its support materials do not demand any specific therapeutic modality and act in support of all theories and practices including:
